9/29/16 Each day as residents drive past the sign mauka Pi’ilani highway for the Department of Education’s Kihei High School, the excitement of the “groundbreaking” back in January has ebbed somewhat. SEE https://gokihei.org/volunteer/kihei-high-school-groundbreaking

So as rumblings of more likely 6 years, instead of 4 before potential opening** SEE Maui News article 9/27/16** we wonder what is up with the new Charter School up in the R & T park mauka the Highway. The site signage has been updated, as the “future home” sign, at least 2.5 years old, says builder TBD, but we now see the new sign which announces the builder. So what is the current situation?img_4355

Here is the status:

The grading permit has been in the hopper since the end of June, and they expect getting that permit very soon so can start the ground work. Now the building permit went in a few weeks ago and they are starting to get some feedback and requests from the various building permit departments so that process is underway.

Somewhat disappointing progress– why do Maui County permits take sooo long, even for vital projects like SCHOOLS – causing hesitation in predicting when they can break ground , but there is hope it still will be this year.

However we need to remember that the Charter School continues to educate students in all grades currently right here in Kihei. It is just that this new facility will be a big improvement on many levels. Teachers, students and staff will certainly have a more pleasant overall experience at this prime location up in the R & T park, rather than scattered in a number of commercial and industrial locations.

So for the school year, there are still a few seats open in a number of grades which look to be filled within the next two weeks! Get Going!
