South Maui Volunteers and members of the KCA worked this week on an effort to relocate a sand dune blowout from behind the Whale Sanctuary property. This blowout was the result of an incorrectly placed beach trail that allowed the trade winds to funnel blowing sand off of the dune and into the Whale Sanctuary parking lot. South Maui Volunteers fabricated and installed sand fencing panels to capture and build the sand dune away from the site and also installed and have maintained a new pathway that is appropriately oriented. This project is a cooperative effort with NOAA, Maui County Planning Dept, Sea Grant UH, and South Maui Parks Dept.

Wow, you guys are getting elaborate with those fences. I can see the day where you’ll be sought after by other beach communities for your dune maneuvering skills.
