The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the Maui Humane Society jointly presented a “grassroots” event for animal advocates on Monday July 9th at the Cameron Center Auditorium in Wailuku. Inga Gibson, The HSUS’s Hawaii state director, Jocelyn Bouchard, CEO of the Maui Humane Society, and other animal protection organizations discussed how they’re working to improve the lives of Maui’s animals. South Maui State Representative George Fontaine also addressed the group.
The vast majority of the Maui County Animal Coalition, a group composed of thirteen (presently) county animal welfare organizations were in attendance and spoke briefly about their organizations’ efforts to help our county’s animals. The coalition, which formed this year, has monthly meetings in an attempt at a unified effort where collaboration can improve the lot of most all types of our animals, while still maintaining their autonomy. Look for a profession report of this meeting in the upcoming Maui Weekly.
