The Kihei Community Association (KCA) was ‘away’ last month, co-sponsoring and participating in the primary election forum shown on Akaku. But this month we are back at the beach in Kihei, specifically at the Kihei Charter School at 41 E. Lipoa for the Aug 21 Community Meeting at 6:30 PM, talking about the beach, specifically Makena State Beach Park.

The only State Park along our shore line is that jewel named Makena, often referred to as Big Beach, and the notorious Little Beach, or perhaps more appropriately, Oneloa, which was saved from commercial development years ago by persistent community effort.

Come see the video presentation crafted by students Jason and Jai of Maui Huliau entitled, Save Oneloa, under guidance of Executive Director Malia Cahil, followed by a presentation by The State Parks District Superintendent- Maui, Philip Ohta, offering state government’s take. Before opening up the meeting for community questions to the presenters, Irene Bowie will offer the latest from the Oneloa Coalition, the community based volunteer committee working with the state on this parkland.

In addition the nomination process is commencing for the 2013 KCA Board of Directors. See any BOD member for details and an application if you might be willing to serve your community as part of KCA. The September meeting will focus on alternative transportation.

KCA’s food drive continues for the Maui Food Bank, so please remember some non perishable food items to help feed Maui’s hungry. Call (508) 499-9996 for more.  Mahalo
