7/6/23 #kihei

This morning about 100 cyclists gathered at the intersection of Uwapo and S. Kihei Road in N. Kihei before proceeding along the bike path parallel to the Mokulele (Kihei Veteran’s) State Hwy to Hanson Rd. in memory of Kihei resident Volker Weiss. Mr. Weiss was tragically struck head-on by a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of Pulehu Rd. while cycling on Thursday morning July 27.  Upon arrival at the destination in the shadow of the old sugar mill, the riders were able to meet with and exchange emotional expressions with his family.

For decades we have been advocating for safe alternative methods of transportation in our district. Having this tragedy just days before the new high school in N. Kihei is set to open with no safe access to it by bicycle, emphasizes once again this monumental failing.

I could ride it if they just adjusted the seat and the pedals

A number of the participants proceeded up to Lorraine’s in Wailuku for one of their friend’s favorites, shave ice.
