A strategic plan should be a document which articulates both the decisions made about the organization’s goals and the ways in which the organization will achieve those goals

Wednesday, August 7th at 9:30 AM the County Council’s Affordable Housing Committee was gaveled to order by chair Tasha Kama.

She announced that she was totally reversing the meeting sequence by moving public testimony to the end of the meeting allowing both agenda items to have their respective presentations, allow committee members to ask their questions of the presenters, all before the public testimony was accepted .

The Kihei Community Association was there there to offer testimony concerning item AH-17 (11) to support the Hale Kaiola housing project in North Kihei. The reversal of the order of agenda items drastically altered the KCA’s scheduling by a few hours but adjustments were made..

The presentation of the first item commenced, the “Strategic Plan Presentation by the Administration’s Housing and Human Concerns Department,” featuring the department leadership Director Lori Tsuhako as well as the Deputy Director Linda Munsell.

While it was interesting and informative, the KCA was awaiting a housing plan, and none was presented. That seemed to be the conclusion of much of the Council based on their comments and questions, as well as several public testifiers.

The KCA left before all testimony was concluded, due to the scheduling changes.

We were able to offer our oral testimony on the other item, in support of Hale Kaiola. While no committee action was taken on the project, based on the Council reaction, we expect it will have full council support possibly before the end of this year.  While it is too early in the process to forecast price with any certainty, we hope the smaller unit, 2 BR, 1.5 bath might see for under $300.K
