The So Maui District waited decades for an update of the Kihei Makena Community Plan (KMCP) from 1998. So in 2017 when the Planning Department announced the new website was up as part of community outreach for So Maui, we were on our way    https://gokihei.org/environment/gen-mem-meeting-on-community-plan-process-draws-interested-group-tuesday

On  our way,  but at a very slow pace. In 2022 The Planning Dept held an “open house” offering their version of the So Maui Community Plan to be offered to the 13 member Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC).  https://gokihei.org/news/south-maui-community-plan-smcp-update

That same year the CPAC was named & the first meeting scheduled. But the volunteer So Maui community group was hampered by seemingly disorganized Administration  actions or lack of them, forecasting a longer period of meetings. https://gokihei.org/volunteer/what-happened-to-the-community-plan-committee-meetings

So in 2024 the CPAC’s draft plan was set for the next step, analysis by the Maui Planning Commission, who made numerous changes to the plan under the guidance of the Department. From there the draft plan moved to the final step, review by the County Council’ Committee

Now as 2025 is winding down . we learn it will be 2026 when the Council’s DRIP committee will commence their review, when the Council will be addressing all involved with bill 9, and of course the annual extended period on the annual budget. This is also an election year. Will the So Maui District have an updated community plan in 2026?  Stay tuned!
