Tuesday, March 10th, the Maui County Council’s Governance, Ethics and Transparency Committee reviewed two proposed changes to the county charter.
“PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO THE REVISED CHARTER OF THE COUNTY OF MAUI (1983), AS AMENDED, RELATING TO APPOINTMENT OF TEMPORARY ADMINISTRATIVE HEADS.”
“PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO THE REVISED CHARTER OF THE COUNTY OF MAUI (1983), AS AMENDED, RELATING TO CHARTER COMMISSION.”
If the amendments are passed, they will be effective January 2, 2021, and the changes would authorize the Council to appoint nine members, and the Mayor to appoint two members of the 11-member Charter Commission.
But as the clock was nearing noon, no decision was reached on either. These proposals are expected to be revisited in April.
Two amendments were already approved and will be heard at full Council this Friday, March 13th. Five more will be considered on Monday, March 16th at a meeting slated for 9:00 AM.
In summary, including the amendments at the start of this article, the council is considering up to nine changes to the county charter.
