Representatives of the Kihei Community Association met with county Public Works Director David Goode and Susan Foley, executive assistant to South Maui District County Council Member Kelly King, to walk along South Kihei Road near the Kihei Post Office on July 28. KCA had asked for the participation to demonstrate the need for safe contiguous sidewalks in the area. The group walked north along South Kihei Road to Kulanihakoi Street and then back. The experience of disconnected sidewalks, squeezed road shoulders and lack of simple, lined crosswalks were observed and discussed. KCA distributed a detailed plan, including area maps formulated several months ago. Goode indicated that small improvements can be made in the near future, such as widening the bridge over Waipuilani Gulch so that the mauka pedestrian path is safer, according to an announcement from KCA. He further advised that some South Kihei Road improvements will be made during the resurfacing this year.
