UPDATE  7/22/24 We  noted the project wrapped up on Thurs 7/18. and while we saw no notice,  today workers were back South of Kaonoulu removing sand, the very location we mentioned and showed with sand piles. But without the NSCR to use as a detour,  they resorted to alternating traffic in a single lane resulting as you would expect very long lines of backed up traffic. It appeared this would be a single day effort, so we expect it will be back to normal on Tuesday

UPDATE  7/16/24  Day two

Here we see the South end of the road closure of So Kihei Rd  (SKR) at intersection of Kaonoulu. Thus all vehicles driving West on Kaonoulu have to turn left on to  SKR.

As vehicles proceed South on SKR after the detour for sand removal, we seen sand blowing onto the road surface on both sides of the road. Cyclists are forced out of the bike lanes to compete with traffic

On mauka side, a sidewalk begins, but of course that too is sand covered along with the bike lane

Yet there is no sand removal announced for this segment

7/8/24 #kihei

The County Administration announced South Kihei Road (SKR) will be closed daily 7/15- 7/19/24 for sand removal.

This is part of SKR included in the daily closure

The sand issue on this road extends South beyond Kaonoulu – ask the condos on the mauka side across from the Whale Sanctuary – but since the detour route designated by the Department of Public Works is Kenolio Road, part of the very long proposed SKR but not expected to be open for several  more years, that part of SKR is not included.
