This first reading at Maui County Council, directed by chair Danny Mateo, this morning achieved unanimous approval (7-0) to ban mopeds from the newly opened  Kihei bike path makai Liloa in central Kihei. Walter Enomoto of the Maui Bicycle Coalition, in addition to KCA, tesified in support, as there was no oppostion. The second and final reading is expected later this month.

In response to KCA testimony, Council member Couch expressed he will investiate why the slow speed mopeds ride in bike lanes on county streets and roads with 20 or 25 MPH speed limits.

KCA has concerns in that mopeds and their drivers are not required to have insurance or a license for vehicle or driver.
