2/15/25 #kihei Work continues
We saw the progress on the portion of SKR North of the Kulanihako’i Stream https://gokihei.org/featured/update-on-south-kihei-road-repair-as-of-2-13-25
But this morning we looked on the South side of this stream where no one was working (To be clear crews were hard at it Saturday AM on other side by Kaonoulu intersection)

The big puka at the base of the crossing South end is right up to edge (white line) of the Southbound lane

It seems impossible to safely open this key part of SKR until the huge sinkhole is filled. While the workers are going 7 days a week, the amount of damage seems to require a full month to fix. Then, how long will the fix hold up? Until the next storm? Too bad that County Admin did not follow the KCA plan a decade ago for the prefab drop in bridge

A drop-in bridge over that sunk portion of S Kihei’s Rd sounds like a possible solution. At least a suggestion..
KCA suggested that back in 2018 County said no! https://gokihei.org/environment/kulanihaoi-river-bridge-proposal-was-discussed-monday-5-14-2018-in-council-chambers-at-iem-but-no-firm-conclusion-yet
I attended the meeting on flood mitigation on Wednesday. Seems like all talk and no action. In regards to the catch basins to collect the water above Kihei before it comes down and floods Kihei, there was talk but no definitive information about when this might happen. As we know, they keep putting “bandaids” on the problem areas but never fix it.
On another note, how can the Maui Planning Commission approved any of the proposed projects in Kihei until flooding is addressed along with water supply, roads, emergency exit roads and affordable houseing. STOP THE BLEED….USE COMMON SENSE! Listen to the community, most would say NO MORE!!!
Mahalo Carol. Decades of plans & proposals with no action have us in the state we are in. More building in wetlands and flood areas approved Tell the Planning Commission this Tues 900 AM 2/18 and March 11 900 AM
