Of all the South Maui shoreline County Parks, Kalama seems to have the most diversified activities. Weekday mornings, when there are no team sport matches occurring on the playing fields , a mix of residents and visitors are enjoying the pleasant weather and surroundings actively and passively, doing and watching.

The surf schools and board rental businesses in and around Kalama Park are a sore spot with local resident surfers. On any given day they make it nearly impossible for resident surfers to utilize the park and it’s various surfing breaks. This “user conflict” was brought to the attention of county officials but nothing has been done to protect the interests of resident park users. The park and it’s adjacent surf breaks have become another public resource turned over to private business and the tourism industry.
