Today the makai Kulanihako’i sediment removal project has finally begun! This gulch has been filling up for at least 10 years from many mud floods. Sediment testing confirmed up to 10 ft. of upcountry sediment in the gulch. The cumulative effects have dramatically reduced the capacity of the gulch and residents are extremely concerned about property damage as we head into the rainy season.

PB Sullivan has estimated the project will take 6 months. Tree removal and dirt-barrier construction are the first step. Residents have been working with the County for more than a year to get this project off the ground. Federal funding will help ease the cost.

We want to thank the County for investigating and approving an emergency project to remove the sediment filling our gulch (DPW Job No. 24-22).
