The term surreal came to mind on Thursday (5/31/12) evening at UHMC as a presentation by the Federal Environmental Protection Administration EPA), which included three representatives from the Clean Air Branch of the State’s Department of Health (DOH,) addressing “Haze” at Haleakala Park atop Maui Island. Seemingly the vast majority of those attending, including those who offered public testimony, were concerned about sugar cane burning by H C & S, and to some extent, the firm’s burning of coal at their refinery, but neither the feds nor the state were considering this aspect of air pollution. Seems everything relating to agriculture is exempt. A detailed professional report of the meeting is available at Maui Now. http://mauinow.com/2012/06/01/opinion-epa-maui-hearing-an-expensive-farce/
