Earlier this week SKR was closed for several hours between Uwapo and No Kihei Rd (NKR). While the increasingly  frequent mudfloods of stormwater raging down the mountain are the usual reason, this time the water came up onto the roadway from the Kai’s king tides.

This is the new “bridge” installed about a decade ago just South of the NKR/SKR intersection

For some history on the months long road closure to install this stream gulch crossing, SEE  https://gokihei.org/development-project-review/south-kihei-road-to-be-closed-again

Seawater remains in the stream gulch days after it overflowed and closed the road in both directions

Much of the community questioned why this replacement crossing was not to be a raised bridge so water would flow under the elevation, County DPW advised it was concave so water could flow over & under. And it did ,as the very high tide just flowed up to and over the crossing and flooded the roadway sufficiently to close the road for several hours. So now e have flooding of the area both from the ocean and the stormwater. Imagine having King tides at the same time we have stormwater raging down the mountain?
