While not specific to South Maui, Mayor Bissen touched on a number of issues of great concern to our area in his State of the County address at an almost full Maui Arts & Cultural Center on March 15, 2024:
- Investing in the North-South Collector Road
- Cracking down on short-term rentals to make more of them available to Maui residents, especially displaced people from Lahaina
- An internal policy that prevented anonymous reporting of suspected illegal short-term rentals will be removed; it will now be possible to report evidence of illegal short-term rentals anonymously
- The Minatoya exemption list (grandfathered short-term rentals in areas zoned for residential use) will be reviewed
- Rent stabilization
- A new initiative called County as a Campus to encourage high school seniors to explore career opportunities in the county; there are currently 700 vacancies in the administration
