While this report was created as a result of the massive firestorm that wiped out Lahaina Town. here is what it is offering:
“Purpose: To identify the causes of wildfires and preventative action that may be
taken to reduce the risk of wildfire throughout the State, and prepare
recommendations for appropriate legislative action.”
We believe this is a valuable document for all areas of Hawaii concerned about wildfires in their community

i just read this, there are many great items in it that should be developed further.
What is missing is an explanation of the almost complete lack of state or county regulations or laws that would give our authorities the tools they need to deal with recalcitrant landowners, especially remote ones, when they refuse to mitigate fire risks on their land.
These regulatory frameworks have been in place in many west coast communities for decades. Our county council should be working on such things right now. If county councils won’t do it, a state level set of laws and regulations should be established. Asking people nicely will work in some cases but many (especially remote and some local land bankers) will resist any effort that requires them to spend money and time, it’s just not in their budget, nor do many of them care. The land is just an investment, they are not good neighbors.
Mahalo for you input Stephen. You see this is a draft report. The group of State Representatives who created it had a (Zoom) public hearing this morning to accept community input as they move to finalize it. Included in that working group is So Maui Rep Terez Amato. You might consider contacting her to express your concerns, as it seems reasonable they may intend to take legislative action at the session in Jan. Meanwhile you would be able to ask So Maui Council member Tom Cook if he is taking any such action on the County level. That communication might offer guidance for your approach with Rep Amato Aloha
