Lots of open parkland with the family homes in the background – but still missing the playground

When Ikaika Ohana was in the process of acquiring the land for the 100% truly affordable family rental housing project  that became Kaiwahine Village, adjacent to Hale Pi’ilani County Park, there was talk the County would construct a playground there for the new and present neighborhood keiki. In addition to the housing, this developer was required to build a water tank for that neighborhood, as well as repave all of Kaiwahine Road. Still no playground. When the housing was nearly completed ,a huge wildfire burned right to the edge of the buildings, and the related $ million damage postponed the move in for several months.  Still no playground. The raffle was held to select the new renters,

The raffle to announce  the qualified residents to be selected as Kaiwahine Village new tenants produced smiles of joy form the winners and the presenters

Former County Parks and Recreation Director Karla Peters

The move ins were completed, and, you guessed it, no playground.

At the early meetings of the  South Maui Community Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) in 2022, a Parks & Rec representative told the Commitee the playground would be constructed in 2023.

Today, NO PLAYGROUND!
