This afternoon, 7/28/14 your Association submitted testimony to the Council’s IEM Committee in support of legislation that would severely limit Polystyrene containers throughout the County. This group includes the well known product Styrofoam, which is severely detrimental to many facets of our environment, and has an almost infinite level of endurance. This bill would only affect a small segment of these objectionable products, namely what are usually considered as “plate lunch” containers, which are purposed for single use. While the Association feels a more widespread restriction is needed, we support this as a single step forward. KCA had offered similar testimony a few years ago, but our support did not offset those opposed to any restriction.. While we were unable to remain for the entire committee meeting this afternoon, we did hear all of the 16 public testimony offered, including three from County Council candidates, Courtney Bruch, (pronounced brook) “Fitz” Fitzpatrick and Mayor’s EA Mike Molina, who stated he was speaking as a private citizen, and the 90 minutes spend in chamber were on his work break. We were unable to hear the various administration departments, particularly the Environmental Management , which is responsible for the land fill , recycling and trash collection, nor Committee members discussion. Here is the bill: http://www.co.maui.hi.us/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/19275 In addition we voiced support for a non binding resolution “zero waster as a waste management policy.” While we are not strong supporters of our law makers making statements which have no effect of law (no teeth) we feel it is a laudable goal & hope it can lead to future legislation.
