It is with great sadness that we report our friend, colleague and current KCA board member, Joseph Bertram III, peacefully passed away last night, May 24, from Aids-related pneumonia. Joe’s long history with KCA included time as vice president and as a board director. He also represented south Maui as our state legislator from 2006 to 2010. He served on the county Planning Commission and the mayor’s Bikeway Advisory Committee which conceptualized and developed the Kihei Greenway system that is still a work in progress. For many years Joe headed the non-profit Greenways Maui dedicated to establishing a pathway system around Maui island. Joe attended Kihei Elementary School and Baldwin High and loved being in Kihei. His passion for making our beloved community a walkable, bikeable neighborhood never waned. To this day, KCA is driven to continue forward with this goal in his honor. Imua our friend. RIP
There is a tentative celebratory tree planting in Joe’s honor planned for this Wednesday, May 27 at 9:30 AM at Hale Pi’ilani Park in North Kihei, organized by our South Maui State Representative Tina Wildberger. Stay tuned for details and confirmation.
