Once this bar and grill and swimming pool are constructed makai of S Kihei Rd., the first phase of the Hilton Vacation Time Share project is expected to open. This segment will be built atop these raised post to allow for flooding, sea level rise and ocean surge. But the community and KCA continues to question why anyone is constructing anything so close to the kai and if it is legal.
It is our understanding in communications with the Planning Dept that legal approval was acquired a long time ago. Of course the near shore location is within the Special Management Area (SMA) and requires a permit for any construction there. The lengthy time of this project caused expiration of the SMA permit in 2018. However, the Maui Planning Commission unanimously approved the developer’s request for an eight year extension, so it rolls on unchanged.
Soon we will see a bar and grill business open to the public sitting on these raised posts and an adjoining swimming pool right at the shoreline for timeshare owners and their guests.

This project is a great example of stopping ALL new hotels. This bar and grill and pool under current laws should not have been ok’d being so close to the ocean. The builders tore down the old building down to the slab. Because they left the slab they call it a remodel and can build anything they wanted. Boo.
Worse yet, when it is built it will be for Hilton Members ONLY. ONLY!! Locals can not eat there. If you think I am wrong, check again. What about the beach cove it’s built on? Will locals also be unable to use the beach cove in front of this private “Beach Club”?
This whole project only benefits tourists. Locals can’t use it or stay there unless your a member.
New hotels only benefit short term construction companies. Usually from the mainland. Once they are built the locals are stuck with hundreds more visitors FOREVER per hotel.
Mahalo Libby We agree with all you say here with the possible exception of who’s $$ they will accept at the bar & Grill. We were advised by Tyler Middleton of Hilton Grand Vacations that the B & G would be open to the public. Who advised you otherwise?
You may be aware the the Council is discussing a 2 year ( to start) moratorium on new vacation rentals (includes time shares , hotels & more) this week. The first one was today 5/17 & the next is WED 5/19 at 9 AM. We encourage public testimony
