If you want to try to get some county government spending actions in South Maui, here’s a way to start the process. Mayor’s budget shows no major spending for our community.

It’s a mess, we know, but something we’ve been working hard on for years. In Summer of 2019, Members of the Kihei Community Association and the skateboard community and the skatepark builders (at the time) were working together to repair the ramps along with finishing the street park renovations. In the last minute, the Maui County Parks Dept. decided that the work should stop and maybe they wanted to fully remove the ramps. Members of the KCA and local skaters then volunteered and cleaned over 3,000 pounds of garbage from under the ramps. We were advised by the Parks dept. that we technically should not have done that, because we were trespassing. At that point the KCA felt that we were being told to back off, but we still needed to make sure this facility was not completely abandoned or removed. So the same members of the KCA and local skaters then met with the Mayor’s office, convincing them not to remove the old ramps, that they just needed to be refurbished. The KCA worked with County Council and Kelly King to secure the funding in FY2021. The Parks Dept then proceeded with a structural engineering study, permitting and put out a public bid to repair the ramps. That bid will be opened on March 30, and then a contract should be given to a local General Contractor who will work with skateboard ramp builders to finally repair the ramps. The work should hopefully be done this summer and then a grand opening ceremony will happen. If you have concerns about the current state of filth or crime around the park, please contact the Maui County Parks Dept. Or call 911 if it is an emergency.
Why does the Parks Dept let this popular park get into disrepair with filth, etc.. What is with Kelly King that she can?t ensure South Maui Parks are taken care of. It seems like she is not doing much for South Maui these days………
Seems all agree it is a mess, but is this a legislative issue or an administrative one? The ledge provides the funding and the Admin uses it.
The $$ is there, but the Administrative Dept does not use it in the best way for the community. Read Andrew’s detailed comment below on the situation for a hands on explanation & evauation of the real situation & what is causing the mess
