Maui County has announced the opening ceremony for initial segment of the bike path/greenway next Friday 7/30/11 at 11:00 AM at intersection of Liloa and Pi’ikea in N Kihei. As you can see, the end segments at Lipoa ( South) and Waipuilani (North) seem almost ready.
However the middle portion shows a lot more preparation will be needed before this half mile stretch is ready to be traversed. Part of this gap is likley trying to mesh this project with the roundabout which is set to “break ground” on this same date, but beyond that, there is a large stretch extending from Pi’Ikea southward which appears to be way beyond the roundabout area.
The community is welcome to attend this opening ceremony, so if you’re able and willing, you can see how bikeable it is on Friday. But after years of waiting, we expect the bicycling segment of our South Maui community will welcome what is usable and safe.

This bike path progress is wonderful. Have we any idea when work might continue southward? jeanne d.
Mahalo, Jeannie. well technology finally caught up with our “real time” conversation at Farmers’ Market.. So plan is bike path to extend for Kaonoulu south, to hook it with this one at Waipuilani. Then extend Southward from Lipoa, where it terminates now, at least through the park to Welakahao (by Hope Chapl.) I want to push them to go beond that folowing the road that goes along to HC, & right on down to Alahele Pl (Foodland & Booze triangle)
