This morning (10/30/13) the County Council Land Use Committee, chaired by Council Vice- Chair Bob Carroll, heard a single item, Community Plan Amendment and Change in Zoning for the Proposed Kihei High School. The only two public testifiers were your Association BOD members Mike Moran and Andrew Beerer. While both strongly endorsed approval of the change to facilitate the progress of getting the school built , Moran testified for the Association requested a condition, requiring a pedestrian/bicycle underpass under the Pi’ilani Highway along upper edge of the gulch, while Beerer, the chair of Kihei High School Action Team (KHAT), requested simple approval.

Public testimony was followed by a visual presentation by the DOE (see below), preceding spokespersons for various state and county departments. Much of the discussion concerning the proposed underpass, and no one offered opposition.

KCA was very encouraged at DOE mention that Dan Burden will be contracted to assist with transit planning of the facility, but disappointed that nothing has been finalized concerning use of R-1 recycled water from the nearby County’s Kihei water treatment facility. However with DOE’s projection of a 2018 opening, there are years to get this in order.

While we were unable to remain for the complete meeting, it is our understanding that the measure passed with only minor adjustments. Look for a professional report in the Maui News.
