When the Kihei-Makena Community Plan (KMCP) became County law in 1998 calling for a walkable/bikeable South Maui district, our resident population was smaller, we had fewer visitors, the Pi‘ilani Hwy was a 2 lane road with wide shoulders, South Kihei Road (SKR) was in good condition, and the North South Collector Road (NSCR) was planned as a third North-South transit for mostly community use by residents.
As we await the final South Maui Community Plan (SMCP) to be reviewed by our Council, and approved to be the current plan, of course we have more residents and visitors, the Pi‘ilani was restriped (NOT WIDENED) with 3′ wide shoulders in several places.
South Kihei Road is collapsing in several locations, causing complete closures.
The North-South Collector Road is a series of disjointed segments.
Currently with South Kihei Road closed at Kaonoulu, the only way to drive, walk, roll or cycle at this street is the Pi‘ilani Hwy. Non-drivers would have to squeeze into those three feet as all manner of vehicles blow by at well over the 35 MPH limit.
Would you do that? Would you allow your keiki do so?

How about posting some videos of the dangers on Facebook, NextDoor and elsewhere from the shoulder of Piilani Hwy in various locations during different hours of the day? Perhaps Hawaii News Now could assign a camera crew and Chelsea Davis (or other broadcasters) for broader exposure?
The only way for locals to bypass South Kihei Road now is Piilani Highway. Yep by paving the dirt section of Liloa Road one could avoid both South Kihei Road and Piilani Highway for local traffic. It’s about time that that section was completed.
WE totally agree. The missing segments between Kaonoulu & Waipuilani should have been completed a decade ago. The present schedule to complete one half in the 2020’s & the other in the 2030’s is unacceptable
