Hawaiians saw the importance of the connection between mauka (upcountry) and makai (sea), with stream flows linking the two and nurturing life all the way down. Appropriate crops were grown at each elevation. The people of a district – an ahupua’a – had their needs met by managing the resources at each level of their pie-slice-shaped region. Now residents and visitors to South Maui will be able to learn about these districts as they pass through them.
