UPDATE  3/19/24 #kihei

We swung by this afternoon, & with no one working there, we are guessing the action is pau.

We see the barricades remain thus afternoon (3/19/24), but unsure what that means.

The barricades are set in the bike lane, so if & when they are removed, it seems the location would be back in pre storm status. Of course the blowing sand matter continues

Yesterday morning a crew from the Highways Division of the Department of Public Works was at work on the makai side of South Kihei Road (SKR) just South of the Kūlanihāko‘i stream. This part of the roadway was washed away back in January and has had barricades in the bike lane of SKR ever since.

Now about 2 months later we seem workers taking actions to fill this puka, similar to the one further North on this roadway which had it closed for several weeks, as that one jutted into the roadway.

As we frequently cycle here and hope drivers do share the road (legally required to allow cyclist three feet of safety distance) we never see anyone driving 10 MPH over the hump. Als.o you can see on the North side of the culvert closer to Kaonoulu there are more barricades at another puka

A lot depends on timing and the whims of Mother Nature, but the proposed action to dig into this streambed between SKR and the Highway https://gokihei.org/category/education-2 could assist greatly in reducing mudflood damage in this immediate area.

We will keep an eye on this location
