Four Monkey Pod trees at 790 So Kihei Road are slated to be cut down soon, apparently because they are upsetting a portion of the sidewalk. The trees, estimated to be at least 40 years old, are located on the makai side of the road by the Maui Schooner resort. A group of residents are appealing to the county to halt this process until the public can weigh in and offer alternatives to this action. Independent arborist educator Ernie Rezents reports at least of three of the four trees can be saved, as offered in his nine page professional report offered to numerous Maui County Officials on this situation

Mike,
Thank you for your reply to my email. I spoke to John Buck and Lance Fukashima-David Sakoda’s immediate supervisor. Lance basically said unless an alternative is found the trees will be removed. Lance will be at the arborist committee because David Sakoda is on vacation. I know for a fact that the arborist committee did not support David Sakoda’s decision to remove the trees either. It is a written in their minutes.I have spoke also to two members of the arborist committee, both members also of Maui Outdoor Circle and we are all going to give it our best to save these beautiful trees. I just spoke to Sue Kiang about your email and she’s glad you will be attending the arborist committee meeting.Thank you for calling in with the correct information about the health of the trees. I really hope we can make a difference at Wednesday’s meeting.
