When a Monday workday falls on a holiday, we always hesitate. As it turned out we had some participants that cannot make our regular Monday crew workday so they joined our regular crew on the holiday. We were also joined by Merrill Kaufman from the Pacific Whale Foundation whose Volunteer-On-Vacation program helps sponsor our efforts.
Our workday goal was to remove invasive plants in the dune areas near Kamaole 2 and re-establish the dune-to-park pathways after the recent large south swell we experienced. Our park-to-beach pathways are a key element in the health of our dune system. Without good visible and user friendly pathways park users will often trample over delicate dune plants on their way to or from the beach.
KCA members have been involved in dune restoration projects in Kihei for over 30 years. The KCA works in partnership with the Parks Dept and with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College. If you would like to join with us in protecting and maintaining our important coastal dune system please join us on a Monday morning at one of our beach parks. Our schedule and location for the next workday can be found at www.SouthMauiVolunteers.com or by calling Bob at 808-264-1798.
