Mahalo, Mark. Yet the State DOE has done almost nothing for all these years, in spite of the legal requirement, and now is indicating the long awaited opening of the High School will be further delayed
It looks like they are getting rid of dirt from the mud flood by spreading it in the gulch. Tell me that isn’t true, as that would just provide a source for more mud for the next flood.
You would have to contact the County Administration’s DPW for an answer to what you imply .
To us it seems they are gathering the mud rather than spreading it. What is done with the evergrowing mounds might yield more clues to the purpose of the actions
This is in reference to your article on candidate forums. I remember as a kid, the political candidates travelled to the various towns and held rallies throughout the Island. The Kihei rally was held at the old Kihei theatre in the plantation camp and later on the porch/veranda of Kihei School. There would be musicians and dancers also on the agenda and that helped to draw a larger audience.
Thank you for all you continue to do for Kihei. Malama pono. Glenn
Mahalo Glenn. We well remember that there likely would not even be a KCA without postmaster John back in the day. We really appreciate this taste of Kihei history. Aloha
The Department of Public Works hired a private contractor to haul the flood mud out of the gulches and take it to the county land fill where it is being reused to cover refuse..
If the suggestion is to bring a substantial traffic thoroughfare into and through what is entirely residential neighborhoods of North Kihei on Kenolio Rd, it is completely MISGUIDED and the worst in traffic planning/engineering theater. Making quiet neighborhoods suffer for the benefit of new rich developments in the south will not mitigate traffic problems, it will only encourage MORE development to use up the traffic resource. Diverting major traffic flow or overflow through residential neighborhoods is NEVER the solution, only a new problem created on the backs of the local residents.
As an all volunteer membership org, we do permit participation from outside, but often we find some are really unaware of a matter contained in a post. The NSCR has been part of the County planning action for 3 decades. It is clearly stated in the KMCP of 1998. Much of the development during those decades was constructed around that corridor, fully aware of the included necessary infrastructure. But in violation of that plan which calls for development concurrent with infrastructure, it was ignored.
Now as we watch SKR collapse as the sea level rises, the need for the NSCR is exacerbated. The Maui MPO shows the future NSCR only reaching Auhana, showing this has not related to new developments in So Kihei. The KMCP is on our website and reading it can inform those not familiar.
This is not the first state roundabout.
But it may be the first two lane state roundabout.
Aloha
Mahalo for the comment Cheryl. Yes it is the first 2 lane roundabout in Hi. Of course Maui county has 2, including the one in Kihei, & other counties, but we were advised it is the first one done by the State government via HDOT. Are you aware of another on a State highway?
Thank you-Mike! Always appreciate the information you share!
Mahalo. All our actions are done by the org as a team.I could do very little without board support
If you lived as close to this as we do and had to deal with all the traffic, you’d be opposed to it.
“Roundabouts are designed to promote a continuous, circular flow of traffic. …!”
How do you justify that this “continuous flow of traffic” is safe for any pedestrian, let alone newly licensed drivers?
2 accidents already and more to come with out a doubt, and it’s only been 2 days!
I live right there and will be recording and showing the entire state how big of mistake this will be and how many accidents this decision will cause. Hopefully it doesn’t cost anyone their life but it’s just a matter of time. I hope I’m wrong but when the first fatality happens,, you and anyone else agrees with this idiocy will have to live with it. I will be there to make sure everyone knows about those who thought it was a good idea and will never let you or them forget what it really cost this community in the long run!

A roundabout on a highway?????? Who’s brilliant idea was this? Isn’t that illegal if it’s designated a highway and therefore gets government highway funds?
Nice to see someone supporting the right thing! Roundabout is still a horrible idea!
3/7/22
You can participate by indicating your choice of 5 names offered, but only have a single week to do so.
Too late.
It is NOT too late. You have until May 13
I drive this highway to get to work several times a week and traffic is bad enough already, makes you wonder who’s bright idea this is and if they live close by this area, this is so wrong to do this to a highway that helps move us safely in our cars, WOW think it’s time to do some remodeling to those who are in agreement with this insane idea. I hate these so called Round About and avoid them if I can, the one by Safeway is all that is needed if it is needed at all, STOP trying to make Maui be like the mainland, we are not the mainland even though I was born and raised there, I love Hawaii, proud to be a resident here, but I sure hate to see how our so called County and State government is destroying the beauty of South Maui. I worry about the kids in danger every day they go to this new school, I am grateful I do not have kids attending this school. Any deaths or harm done to any child is on all of you who approve this stupidity.C

Not sure which level of government you address for funding of a roundabout on a Hawaii Sae Highway, but will advise the federal, state & county agencies have consistantly stated that modern roundabouts are the preferred first choicefor new intersections due to safety issues
