Almost daily we hear community comments about the lack of transportation infrastructure in South Maui. Traffic jams on the Pi’ilani Hwy; why don’t we have sidewalks? what happened to the North South Collector Road? I would bike ride if it was safe; buses that come once per hour have little value; we need a plan!
Almost six years ago there was an attempt at some proposals coordinated through the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
About half of these involved County officials have moved on since 2020. See what was proposed and what has transpired since.

Thank you so much for bringing this continuing saga to light once again. So far they have not achieved any of this. the next section of North South Collector is slated for 2029 completion. As they do not have ownership of the land………??????? there are areas that they do have the land to do the road. I do not understand why they cannot do what they ow while they fight for what they don’t have. I think your comment that most of the people involved in this plan are no longer in those positions so we start over each time a new person is hired. Crazy….
Mahalo Our understanding is County does own the land where the NSCR roadway & parallel bike path will lie, but the builders need access to some adjoining plots to stage materials during construction. Most if not all financial offers have been made to those adjoining landowners now. There is a time limit to startconstruction next year or potentially lose the $25, M federal grant
South Kihei Road is 2 lanes, it should be one lane and one way. Keep traffic to local traffic, and allow for bikes, walking and lots of public transport. A buss that runs once an hour is not public transport for the masses. It needs to be every 15 min. Maybe just a bus route that only does N Kihei road to Wailea town center. Center of Mokulele Highway should be rail and terminate in Wailea and stop a few spots along Kihei, North south connector road should not be a road but bikes, walking trails and rail. Parking lots in various places should be paid parking or take public transport. Healthier people walk and others see doctor more often. Don’t talk about what is wrong now. talk about what it should look like 30 years from now and then plan and put financing behind plans. Thus far Kihei has had Federal funding removed, because the plans that was put forth and funded was not approved or met backlash from various community groups. Stop talking now, talk about where your grandkids should walk, park and live…
I think water/sewer, power utility, transportation department and zooning department need to receive a wish list from Kihei and then put proposals (plural) out for community to comment on. Then the politicians can get to work on funding and approval. It is not rocket science – but it takes years
