The Kihei Community Association has completed phase one of a project to purchase and install high quality commercial grade park benches at Kalama Park. The first ten benches were generously paid for by Maui community members and businesses. This needed project was possible because of the strong partnership between the community and the Maui County Parks and Recreation Dept. The benches were approved by the Parks Dept. and installed by skilled volunteer labor. They are located along the ocean side of the pedestrian pathway and also near the playground at this 36.5 acre park. The value of each bench installation is $1500 and there will be a bench plaque honoring donors who contribute $500 or more. Contributions for benches at the north end of Kalama Park are needed.

Times are tough. All county departments are being asked to take drastic cuts in their budget but important services and equipment are still needed to add to the enjoyment of our parks by the community. Another key partner in this project is Tri-Isle RC&D, a 501(c)3 non-profit authorized to assist with grass-roots community based projects such as this one. Tri-Isle also assisted with the South Maui Coastal Heritage Trail, Pump-Don’t Dump, and Hoaloha ‘Aina Volunteers.
