Park Usage Restrictions

We missed our “prompt 6:30 PM start” by a few minutes to let the community enjoy the delicious pupu from Hawaiian Moons. After a few announcements, moderating board member Don Couch offer a bit of history on the relationship between the ocean activity businesses and the county government relating to parks usage, then turned to recently retired parks employee Bob Straub to offer his perspective, followed by Maui Dive Company’s general manager Jeff Straun speaking for the businesses.

Then the community split up into six discussion groups to consider proposed regulations on these businesses in an attempt to find a proper balance with resident’s use of County park facilities. In addition, all were afforded the opportunity to offer a question to the Parks Department, since there were none in attendance, via a KCA provided form. These will be submitted to the department as a community service by KCA. Representatives from these groups then presented their opinions and conclusions from their discussions, while KCA board member Gail Weaver recorded the highlights onto the screen for all to view, and to be compiled for presentation to the Parks Department.

The meeting closed with the reminder of the next community meeting on Tuesday May 20 with refreshments provided by Shaka Pizza and Star Market located in Kihei.
