The public is invited to review and comment on three concept options for the South Maui Community Park Master Plan Update, according to the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). The open house is on Thursday, February 7 from 4:30 – 7:30 PM at the Kenolio Recreation Center, 131 South Kihei Rd.  People may drop in any time while it’s open.

During the open house, DPR will provide concept sketches on a series of panels, and residents can offer comments at stations, or speak directly to the project’s design team and county staff. The three concept have been prepared with the assistance of a project advisory team, comprising seven people who bring a variety of perspectives and expertise. The committee has met twice and is scheduled to meet two more times.

The project focuses on the undeveloped portion of South Maui Community Park between the new South Maui Gymnasium (now under construction) and East Welekahao Rd.  A master plan was originally prepared many years ago but because of changes to what was built, DPR believed that the plan should be updated.

“The department is excited about this project because the updated master plan will result in more recreational opportunities for the community.” said Karla Peters, Acting DPR director. “We also want to thank the project’s advisory committee for helping us develop the three concepts.”

After this open house, the advisory committee will work with the department to select a preferred concept and finalize the design. A second open house will then be held to present the final master plan. Once the final master plan is completed, the consultant team will begin the preparation of detailed design and construction drawings.  The consultant team is headed by R.M. Towill, a planning and engineering office in Honolulu.
