Maui Electric to start construction of new Ka‘ono‘ulu Substation
KAHULUI, Oct. 10, 2017 – Maui Electric Company will begin construction this month of the Ka‘ono‘ulu Substation on the mauka side of Pi‘ilani Highway and Ohukai Road. Construction is scheduled to be completed by summer 2018. During construction, no extended interruptions to electrical service are anticipated and minimal impact to traffic is expected.
Approved by the state Public Utilities Commission in 2015, and following community meetings, the new substation will enable electricity to be reliably distributed to homes, schools, and businesses in the growing area of South Maui. It will also enable the integration of more renewable energy resources on the electric grid through improved monitoring and state-of-the-art communications equipment. Should an electrical circuit experience a fault, or an abnormal amount of electric current, this substation will give system operators the ability to isolate the problem to smaller sections on the system and prevent more widespread outages.
“As South Maui continues to develop, the Ka‘ono‘ulu Substation will provide electricity to our growing communities in the area,” said Sharon Suzuki, president of Maui Electric. “This ensures everyone – residents, businesses, schools, and resorts – will continue to receive reliable power when they need it.”
Planned for the most optimal site to provide power to South Maui, the substation will sit on about one acre of land approximately 1,000 feet from the Pi‘ilani Highway. It is considered a “low-profile” substation that is built compactly and the equipment will not stand as tall as a “high-profile” substation like the one on Dairy Road in Kahului.
Based on community feedback, a portion of the substation’s electrical lines will be underground. New lines will tap into the existing transmission and distribution lines currently running between the M?‘alaea and K?hei Substations on Kaiola Place, and go underground across Kaiola Place and Pi‘ilani Highway.
The new lines will then rise up mauka of Pi‘ilani Highway, where eight poles and about 1,000 feet of overhead lines will connect the substation to the electrical system. Landscaping that addresses security needs and aesthetics is currently being determined.
About 19,000 residential, business, and large commercial customers in the South Maui area are served by three substations. With more than 15 new projects expected, including the new K?hei high school and upcoming residential developments, the Ka‘ono‘ulu Substation will help to provide the power needed to meet the growing energy needs of the community.

This summer we communicated with Maui Electric Company (MECO) concerning their proposed additional substation construction for North Kihei mauka the Pi’ilani Hwy, just south of Ohukai Road. On July 26 they answered our questions in writing as we requested, so we were prepared that initial work was expected to commence this fall. It has this week.

You may have noticed something new. Along the same line where Sarofim’s proposed mall, AKA the megamall, had the remaining remnants of some framework for a dust control fence finally removed last month—SEE https://gokihei.org/environment/fence-frame-for-proposed-mall-finally-removed-today here comes a new fence. It starts on the North end of the same location, adjacent the Shell gas station, but this new one being built does not extend as far South.

Even though the footprint for the substation is relatively small, (less than an acre), the area being used for all the related mitigation of the project is extensive. MECO advises they have an archeologist on site whenever any action is performed. Stay tuned.

Just when old fencing is removed, here comes a new one in its place

Update to Meco’s Project: I got a call from Albert Perez Thurs. 12:30pm, that he received a call from tenants nearby mentioning there was heavy equipment clearing ground on the property and possibly dynamite was being used. I did go down to the property around 1:15pm. I took photos on the word being down. I spoke to the foreman for the fence work Good Fellows, Good Fellows just doing the shade cloth fence and cattle fence work. I asked if there was a archaeologist or monitor on site? The foreman replied he cannot comment on the Meco project. Gotta talk to the project manager. I did not see a monitor on site. I was told heavy pile driving work was done to break up blue rock boulders. Albert Perez did contact Meco’s president on this project and concerns about is there a monitor. Albert waiting for reply. SHPD was contacted. Waiting for reply……Small kine follow up
